NATURALLY, THERE ARE myriad products currently on the market to make your bike more secure, whether it's a simple lock and chain or an all-singin', all-dancin' garage alarm. But how do you know what you're buying is any good? Mmmm, good question.
To start with, there's Thatcham (www.thatcham.org), a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to carry out research targeted at containing or reducing the cost of motorcycle insurance claims. In doing this, they basically test and approve security devices.
Another independent testing body, whose aim is very similar to Thatcham's, is Sold Secure (www.soldsecure.com). So if you're buying for security purposes, make sure it's Thatcham or Sold Secure approved.
And if you've spent a small fortune on a new bike, then it's wise to consider forking out a little more to ensure it's still there when you open the garage door on Saturday morning. Protecting your wheels doesn't have to be expensive either, a good ground anchor, lock and chain and alarm system can cost less than you think.
The XENA security chain and "Claw" is particularly good for off-road bikes because of the alarm; tamper with it and a piercing siren is triggered, which should wake you up from the deepest sleep and scare off all but the deafest thief. |
